Has Everything Been Invented?
Room

Marc Probst
CIO and VP
Intermountain Healthcare

In 10 A.D. the Roman Engineer Sextus Frontinus stated "Inventions have long since reached their limit, and I see no hope for further developments.” Much later in 1899, Charles Duell, commissioner for the U.S. Patent Office, said, "Everything that can be invented has already been invented.“ In 2005, Sir Alan Sugar, a British entrepreneur made the not so well informed statement, "Next Christmas the iPod will be dead, finished, gone, kaput." As technologists in 2010, what do we say? Are we content that the latest software from our vendors solves the business and workflow requirements of the businesses we serve? Have we basically outsourced innovation and turned our I.S. organizations into installers and maintainers of the technology requested by our users?

Technology is changing (and in most cases improving) on nearly a daily pace. As I.S. professionals we can choose to accept the ‘good ideas’ and innovation of others or we (who are at the front lines of our businesses) can be innovators and apply today’s exciting technologies to increase quality, lower costs and in some cases transform the business we serve. This presentation will focus on the financial, morale, and quality benefits of leveraging new technologies and the actual responsibility we have to continually innovate.

What Does Thinking Have To Do With Leadership?
Room

Cliff Higbee
Director of Member & Statistical Records Division
LDS Church

Leadership and thinking, what do they have in common? What does thinking have to do with leadership? What you think about is important, but how you think about things is critical. Let’s put our heads together and explore HOW we think about WHAT we think about. In this session, we will discuss how integrating this mindset increases personal growth and leadership potential; and the positive impact that can result. Together, we can build a team of thinkers, not just problem solvers.
