9:45 am Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Planning – The First Step is Admitting You Have a Problem
Missouri

Sponsored by InfoBunker

Jon Bolen
EVP, CTO, and General Manager
Iowa Operations Westec Intelligent Surveillance

Westec Intelligent Surveillance provides video surveillance monitoring and guard services to almost 10,000 remote sites across North America and the Caribbean.    As a private-equity backed small to midsize company Westec does not operate with a multi-million dollar capital budget for IT infrastructure – capital is employed only where revenue and profits are directly impacted.  Convincing the organization to move from 6 Mbps of copper bandwidth with zero redundancy to a redundant fiber DS-3, a co-location facility and 22 Mbps of bandwidth to the public internet was no simple task.  Doing all of this with no increase in monthly operating expense, almost zero capital budget and with near zero downtime in a 24x7x365 operation was even more difficult.  In this session, Jon Bolen will describe the process he and his Network Manager undertook to reshape the wide-area infrastructure for Westec .  He will share what Westec learned and, hopefully, provide guidance for other companies to follow.
9:45 am Managing Information for Litigation, Audit, and Regulation
Illinois

Sponsored by IBM

Chris Cotteleer
Partner, eDiscovery and Compliance
Doculabs

Effective management of content has become increasingly critical for organizations facing litigation, as they seek to manage potentially discoverable information.  Additionally, organizations face heightened oversight from both internal audit and external regulatory bodies.  The technology to manage content has become a key part of how an organization approaches its ability to capture, store, manage and produce information.

Today, an estimated 85 to 90 percent of the content created within an organization now exists electronically. Business operations are generating vast volumes of unstructured data – ranging from the content created in desktop applications to the web content and digital assets that are created and used in the course of business. Add to this the growing volume of digital communications – email, as well as the increasing use of instant messaging, PDAs, and voicemail – and it’s clear that today’s organization has many more sources of information to manage than the organization of even just five years ago. This presentation will share best practices and recommendations for how your organization can leverage investments in ECM to manage information for compliance, specifically:
  • Where does Records Management fit into the discovery process for litigation, audit, and regulation?
  • How does technology serve as the foundation for discovery initiatives?
  • Why do we need a program to address discovery issues?
  • What does it take to develop and implement a compliance program?
  • What is the business case for these programs in the absence of large scale litigation?
9:45 am Learning to Swim in Data
Nebraska

Sponsored by Net Direct Systems

Mike Tully
President & CEO
Aerial Services, Inc.

Aerial Services, Inc. in Cedar Falls, IA has been providing professional geospatial services to the private and government markets since 1967. We specialize in acquiring aerial photography throughout the USA and create from this photography a variety of mapping products and services. Because most of what we do is based on high resolution aerial imagery we require very robust, expensive, and reliable storage, processing, and delivery technology. Our recent purchase of a $1.5 million digital aerial camera system has ratcheted up our technology requirements by orders of magnitude.  Until this purchase we produced upwards of 103 Gb per day of full color digital imagery. The new digital camera system can produce upwards of 1 Tb of imagery per day. This season we have been managing 60-100 Tb of new data.

This new and heavy data load is common in the geospatial industry. This industry like many others, has entered a new stage characterized by users and data providers having to swim in massive amounts of data. Learning how to effectively manage and deliver these increasing volumes of data has been a challenge. Google Earth, MS Live Maps, and many others have pushed expectations of very large datasets. The Federal, State, and County governments are acquiring unprecedented amounts of geospatial data. Cell phones further spur this incessant and growing need for more and better geospatial data. In this session Mike will discuss how Aerial Services is managing these large data stores and how we are embracing cloud computing to radically change our revenue streams and how our services (and data) are delivered to our clients.

2:45 pm The Cloud: Real, Secure and Practical, What Exists Today and How Your Business Can Take Advantage Now
Missouri

Sponsored by VMware

Kevin Dohrmann
VP and CTO
CoSentry

Today most organizations dedicate over 70% of total IT spend to maintaining their existing infrastructure. Executives are constrained from delivering IT as a strategic business enabler by complex and inflexible silos of infrastructure. Cloud computing promises to deliver infrastructure on demand; the key to transforming IT from a cost center to a business innovator. But what does it look like? Has the delivery matched the promise? What pain and risk does this introduce and can business actually do anything today?

This case study will explore how one organization has built a safe, secure, high performance infrastructure cloud on an industry standard virtualization platform. If you are supporting virtual machines today, you can get out of the infrastructure business and into the innovation business right now. This session will explain how the business has evolved from a physical infrastructure business to a virtual one, and what that has delivered for their customers.

Achieving IT Cost Savings During and After the Downturn

Illinois

Sponsored by Corporate Contracts

Ken Shaffer
Director of IT
FBL Financial Group

Cost savings is the # 1 issue CIOs are facing given the current economic downturn.  IT professionals are being challenged by their companies to do “more with less” despite a decreasing budget and a diminishing workforce.

Answers to these challenges have been found; while adding true dollars to the department’s bottom line.  In this town hall style breakout, we will be discussing how one company has been able to address cost savings by utilizing a third party in their IT procurement processes (i.e. RFP process, contract negotiations and licensing issues).  The addition of a 3rd party negotiator has allowed this organization to focus on running their business and not focus on the challenges of contract negotiations and licensing issues. Through this cost savings initiative, they have been able to add a significant amount of money to the bottom line and also insure a “best in practice” contract that protects them from hidden or unexpected costs in the future.

One particular project that utilized expert negotiators to assist their team will be discussed.  The project consisted of an RFP, price and contract negotiations for a software purchase. We will also look at ROI and true run rate savings achieved by partnering with this team of expert IT negotiators.
