8:30 am Strategic Virtualization – Think Big to Create an Adaptive Enterprise
Meridian Ballroom

Jack Wilson
Assistant Vice President
Amerisure Mutual Insurance Company

Virtualization has become a “hot topic” in IT circles. The question becomes, does the hype come anywhere close to reflecting the reality? Hear the stunning reality from an organization took the “Think Big” approach and has successfully made the complete Strategic Virtualization transformation (implemented and functioning in production for over two years). Learn the approach they took to overcome the technology and “cultural” issues, critical elements along the “roadmap” to success and learn from the Enterprise Architect’s experience the “must do’s”, the “avoid at all cost” and “better than anticipated” results.

In this session we will discuss how strategic virtualization can streamline, simplify and remove layers of technology (including the “Vista issue”). We will consider this approach in contrast to the normal technology evolution, where new technology is usually layered on top of or along side of existing technology, creating an ever more complex and fragile infrastructure. How implementing a strategic virtual environment for the main reason of creating business value, business flexibility and increased productivity has significant other benefits in the areas of cost-savings, performance, manageability, security, business continuity, disaster recovery, standardization and governance.

The flexibility and adaptability that the strategic virtualized environment creates, means that the infrastructure won't lag behind the business strategy. With a virtualized infrastructure in place, business strategies changes can now be accommodated without having to make changes to the infrastructure.

Amerisure Insurance will be considered as the case study of a company that made the metamorphosis from a typical complex, inflexible, high cost, physically limiting infrastructure to a streamlined, flexible, efficient and agile virtual infrastructure. Once Amerisure made the initial transformation, other areas for further virtualization became obvious and desirable. This included, servers, mobile notebooks, information assets (documents, video, and audio), faxes and softphones. Take advantage of this opportunity to question and challenge the expertise of an experienced virtualization transformation expert.

Implementing an End-to-End Application Performance System
Circle East

Sponsored by Compuware

JP Jackson
Senior Manager
State of Michigan

The State of Michigan was faced with an increasingly complex portfolio of applications deemed critical to the continued operation of State Government.  Unexpected and at times undetected software failures caused inconvenience to the public as well as state staff and frequently resulted in loss of revenues. This presentation will share best practices on how the State implemented an end-to-end application performance monitoring system for their most critical application that resulted in an unqualified success story for the State and the public that rely on these systems.
9:45 am Is IT Transformation Only a By-Product of Business Transformation?
Circle West

Sponsored by Haverstick Consulting

Keith Ensroth
Chief Information Officer
Entertainment Publications

How do you transform an IT organization? Perhaps the preceding question should be, why do you transform an IT organization? A view of IT as a cost center can lead to a view of IT transformation being one of cutting costs. However, the more overarching question that drives IT transformation is the role of information technology (not the IT organization) within the fabric of an enterprise’s culture.

Keith was brought into Entertainment Publications because of an assessment of their IT organization that concluded that the IT problem was not IT’s problem. This didn’t mean that IT didn’t have to change. What it did mean was that IT was not going to add more value to the business until the business changed to utilize the value of information technology.

IT transformation, attempted in isolation, sooner or later hits a wall. We’ve seen the subtle and not-so-subtle examples of that wall being hit – dissolution of a project management office and moving resources out of IT; establishment of a hunker-down, us-vs.-them culture in an IT development organization; a victim mentality in an infrastructure team that thinks (knows?) it has no control over deployment-du-jour.

Recognizing that IT transformation is intimately connected with business transformation is only a first step. How do you create opportunities and take advantage of opportunities? What are the drivers of successful change? How do you utilize IT leaders and key non-IT business allies? This conversation will attempt to extract lessons from a work in progress, careful not to draw hasty conclusions, but willing to put some ideas out there to move the discussion forward.
9:45 am Managing Information for Litigation, Audit, and Regulation
Circle Center
Sponsored by IBM

Chris Cotteleer

Principal
Doculabs

Effective management of content has become increasingly critical for organizations facing litigation, as they seek to manage potentially discoverable information.  Additionally, organizations face heightened oversight from both internal audit and external regulatory bodies.  The technology to manage content has become a key part of how an organization approaches its ability to capture, store, manage and produce information.

Today, an estimated 85 to 90 percent of the content created within an organization now exists electronically. Business operations are generating vast volumes of unstructured data – ranging from the content created in desktop applications to the web content and digital assets that are created and used in the course of business. Add to this the growing volume of digital communications – email, as well as the increasing use of instant messaging, PDAs, and voicemail – and it’s clear that today’s organization has many more sources of information to manage than the organization of even just five years ago. This presentation will share best practices and recommendations for how your organization can leverage investments in ECM to manage information for compliance, specifically:
  • Where does Records Management fit into the discovery process for litigation, audit, and regulation?
  • How does technology serve as the foundation for discovery initiatives?
  • Why do we need a program to address discovery issues?
  • What does it take to develop and implement a compliance program?
  • What is the business case for these programs in the absence of large scale litigations

This discussion will focus on the opportunities, perspectives and mandates associated with developing a "personal leadership style" in today's challenging and chaotic economy. Our intent is to investigate with panelists a number of different questions: Why is leadership development and in particular, a strong personal leadership style more important today than ever? How has the experience of gaining a personal leadership perspective translated into the way you execute your corporate role today? What is it about the process of “getting there” that surprised you the most? What would your peers and subordinates say is different about your leadership practices today? How do you view the difference between leadership and management? Why should organizations spend the money to develop leadership capabilities today? How does a "personal leadership style" integrate the concepts of a moral compass?

1:45 pm Who Cares about Social Media? (And What You Can Do About It)
Circle East

Sponsored by SIM Indianapolis

Pat Coyle
President
Coyle Media, Inc.

The term "social media" started as a curiosity but has quickly become cliché.  Every time mainstream media blathers about how many people are following Oprah on Twitter, it strengthens our desire to dismiss the entire social media movement as irrelevant to business. If there's no ROI, then we don't want it on our plates, right?

But dismissing social media before appreciating its potential is short-sighted, even dangerous. Social media is changing the way people communicate, and it is therefore fundamentally altering our organizations and our culture.

In his talk, Pat Coyle will share two case studies from his real world experience with social media projects: MyColts.net and SmallerIndiana.com. He will explain why these online communities were launched and the management concerns they each face. He will touch on the technology selection process and outcomes to date. Coyle will not prescribe solutions to every companies social media questions, but he will share hard won information and data that could help inform your thinking on this important topic.
