8:30 am Turbo-Charging Your Organization in a Relationship-Based World

Mark Showers
Retired CIO
Monsanto

Whether focused on improving innovation, making faster and better decisions or improving overall effectiveness, you need to take a different approach in today’s flatter organizations.  Success demands effective collaboration within and across organizational, functional, physical and hierarchical boundaries. In this context a network perspective yields multiple performance improvement opportunities that traditional managerial tools such as process mapping, culture surveys and activity analyses all miss. This presentation demonstrates why and how executives must pay attention to collaboration and networks within their organizations. Specifically, for CIO’s and senior IT executives, this presentation provides a CIO perspective to:
  • Based on research done at the McIntire School of Commerce - University of Virginia, demonstrate the way a network lens provides unique insights for leaders to improve value-added collaboration and concurrently performance (organizational and individual), innovation and quality of work life.
  • Discuss the role of collaboration tools and technology in facilitating effective networks in an organization.
  • Review policy and risk management considerations as collaboration becomes more technology enabled both within and across organizational boundaries.

Brett Rathbone is the Chief Enterprise Architect at Molson Coors, a global brewing company with operations in US, UK and Canada, and sales across the globe.  In this session, Brett will provide an account of the goals and benefits of moving to a global IT shared services operating model, as well as some of the challenges.  The session will outline how Molson Coors adopted shared services in IT and developed their vendor partnerships to drive a common approach to IT delivery, building on the best aspects of the three “IT worlds” that existed previously. This new operating model allows IT to leverage capabilities globally and supports greater IT and business alignment. However, like most organization and cultural change, it is an ongoing journey, and the session will conclude with where Molson Coors is today and where they are heading.
11:00 am Managing Information for Litigation, Audit, and Regulation

Sponsored by IBM

James Watson
CEO & Founder
Doculabs

Effective management of content has become increasingly critical for organizations facing litigation, as they seek to manage potentially discoverable information.  Additionally, organizations face heightened oversight from both internal audit and external regulatory bodies.  The technology to manage content has become a key part of how an organization approaches its ability to capture, store, manage and produce information.

Today, an estimated 85 to 90 percent of the content created within an organization now exists electronically. Business operations are generating vast volumes of unstructured data – ranging from the content created in desktop applications to the web content and digital assets that are created and used in the course of business. Add to this the growing volume of digital communications – email, as well as the increasing use of instant messaging, PDAs, and voicemail – and it’s clear that today’s organization has many more sources of information to manage than the organization of even just five years ago. This presentation will share best practices and recommendations for how your organization can leverage investments in ECM to manage information for compliance, specifically:
  • Where does Records Management fit into the discovery process for litigation, audit, and regulation?
  • How does technology serve as the foundation for discovery initiatives?
  • Why do we need a program to address discovery issues?
  • What does it take to develop and implement a compliance program?
  • What is the business case for these programs in the absence of large scale litigations?
11:00 am Virtualizing your IT Staff

David Bessen
VP and CIO
Median News Group

In an environment of lean IT Staffing and staff reductions Median News Group has created something they call “Virtual IT”.   The concept really is not anything new or earth-shattering, but rather it is a way of organizing IT activities so that staff and skills from all around the company may be utilized efficiently; where skills do not exist at one location or facility, we can use skills from another site, either remotely (over the WAN) or in person. In this way, we don’t have to ‘staff up’ at all locations to provide expertise. The other advantage of virtualizing IT, much like virtualizing a server, is that staff utilization increases. For example a specialist in Microsoft Exchange at one location may be under-utilized, while Exchange expertise is needed at another location. Through virtualization, we can use the under-utilized resource elsewhere, regardless of physical location, thereby increasing efficiencies. This is analogous to utilizing idle CPU cycles with a virtualized server.  David Bessen will share with everyone the process they are going through to implement “Virtual IT” and the lessons learned thus far.
11:00 am Finding Value in Enterprise Applications and Enterprise Architecture

Al Rosabal
Deputy CIO
City and County of Denver

IT organizations of all sizes are struggling with the significant sunk costs and potential ongoing costs of enterprise class applications. How can organizations establish a viable structure to maintain the existing assets, while choosing where to invest scarce dollars to maximize value? The approach must leverage strategic planning, reactive responses and proactive responses. Enterprise Architecture as a discipline is like dieting – easy to start but tough to stick with and maintain. A more pragmatic approach to EA, coupled with smart relationships with key vendors, is key to maintaining a portfolio that is sustainable, technically relevant, and innovative. Using a practical approach to strategic planning and portfolio management, this session will discuss:
  • The impact of legacy and siloed applications to the overall cost and agility of the enterprise
  • Is best-of-breed vs.  suite still a viable question, or have we moved past that?
  • Does SOA matter?
  • How can you prevent from stretching staff too thin with the constant barrage of new functionality/apps/products, etc.?
  • What are vendors doing to bridge the gap between ongoing costs and value delivery?
  • How can innovation and flexibility be injected into the large-scale enterprise, especially in this economy?
  • Can IT really communicate its value to the enterprise?

1:45 pm IT’s Role in Business Process Discovery

Russell Gray
VP, IT Facilities Manager
Lockton Companies, LLC

Information Technology projects are undertaken for a variety of reasons, but the end result should always be to help a company grow and prosper.  With this in mind, what should IT’s responsibility be as it relates to a company’s Business Process discovery and documentation  initiative?  A well documented and defined business process goes a long way in helping to determine the scope and success of IT projects, but is often a neglected requirement in small to medium size companies.  IT can promote themselves as solid partners within the business units by proactively engaging in business process discovery and documentation prior to trying to establish requirements and scope for IT projects.  This has multiple benefits:  minimizing the risk of project scope creep, providing the business unit with a framework for future endeavors and keeping IT engaged in the growth of the business.

2:45 pm AirFairs – The Fair way to fly; How Technology Enabled Frontier Airlines to Unbundle its Product Offering

Gerry Coady
SVP & CIO
Frontier Airlines

The Airline industry is extremely competitive, people have choices, and customers are upset at the way airlines have started to nickel and dime them for bags, change fees etc.  In early 2008 Frontier Airlines embarked on a strategy to offer customers 3 different fare products, Economy, Classic and Classic Plus, each “bundle” offering the customer different components, such as seat assignment, meal, free TV etc. However, to enable the company to offer these products required Frontier Airlines to decouple their systems and deploy a whole new internet Booking engine, integrated with back office legacy systems. And the project needed to be completed in 6 months, or less.

Attendees should take away the three things below:
  • How to align IT and Business Strategy
  • How to structure a project and project team  to execute the plan, from disparate business groups, and 3rd party vendors and consultants
  • How to integrate disparate technologies and build a platform for the future.
2:45 pm Implementing Strategies to Meet all of the Business Reporting Needs for a High Paced Production Environment

One of our big challenges is to manage and quickly respond to the myriad of reporting requests coming to IT from business users across the organization. The key to our success in meeting the demands of the business is an agile approach to report development working closely with the end user in an iterative process to meet their needs. In this presentation we will discuss how we employ this process to quickly and effectively meet the demand for specialized reports in a fast paced high volume environment.
