8:30 am Strategic Virtualization – Think Big to Create an Adaptive Enterprise
Iowa Room

Jack Wilson
Assistant Vice President
Amerisure Mutual Insurance Company

Virtualization has become a “hot topic” in IT circles. The question becomes, does the hype come anywhere close to reflecting the reality? Hear the stunning reality from an organization took the “Think Big” approach and has successfully made the complete Strategic Virtualization transformation (implemented and functioning in production for over two years). Learn the approach they took to overcome the technology and “cultural” issues, critical elements along the “roadmap” to success and learn from the Enterprise Architect’s experience the “must do’s”, the “avoid at all cost” and “better than anticipated” results.

In this session we will discuss how strategic virtualization can streamline, simplify and remove layers of technology (including the “Vista issue”). We will consider this approach in contrast to the normal technology evolution, where new technology is usually layered on top of or along side of existing technology, creating an ever more complex and fragile infrastructure. How implementing a strategic virtual environment for the main reason of creating business value, business flexibility and increased productivity has significant other benefits in the areas of cost-savings, performance, manageability, security, business continuity, disaster recovery, standardization and governance.

The flexibility and adaptability that the strategic virtualized environment creates, means that the infrastructure won't lag behind the business strategy. With a virtualized infrastructure in place, business strategies changes can now be accommodated without having to make changes to the infrastructure.

Amerisure Insurance will be considered as the case study of a company that made the metamorphosis from a typical complex, inflexible, high cost, physically limiting infrastructure to a streamlined, flexible, efficient and agile virtual infrastructure. Once Amerisure made the initial transformation, other areas for further virtualization became obvious and desirable. This included, servers, mobile notebooks, information assets (documents, video, and audio), faxes and softphones. Take advantage of this opportunity to question and challenge the expertise of an experienced virtualization transformation expert.

Western Region Manager
Wellpoint, Inc.

You’re considering outsourcing your desk side services and are unsure how to go about it…  What process do I use to assure that I select the right supplier?  How do I write a good Service Level Agreement?  How do I get service delivered to all corners of the US? Kurt Althen, from WellPoint, Inc. (one of the top two health insurers in the US) will describe the process, critical success factors, challenges and opportunities encountered in WellPoint’s recent outsourcing acquisition.
11:00 am WAN Optimization
Missouri Room

Sponsored by Net Direct Systems

Steve Lafrentz
Technical Engineer
Principal Financial Group

Wide area networks offer unique challenges that are not as common in the local area network.  They usually have much less bandwidth and higher latency due to distance and the inherent nature of wide area communications.  Optimization provides some solutions to reduce the impact of latency make more efficient use of bandwidth.

This presentation will offer insight into the use of WAN optimization and which problems are the most important to solve.  Why one enterprise chose to look at optimization, selection criteria and what their deployment strategy is will be discussed.  The presentation will also offer insight into optimization objectives and how success is measured.
11:00 am Cutting Costs and Tapping New Opportunities
Minnesota Room

Sponsored by Open Technologies

Steve Guntly
Manager - Systems Administration
Iowa Network Services

netINS, the Internet arm of Iowa Network Services, has been in the process of implementing a fully redundant backup site over the last two years.  They have also needed to upgrade legacy equipment (DEC Alphaservers) to newer equipment.  Certain services (spam filtering) were also being problematic on existing hardware, and have been consolidated onto newer Sun servers.  Steve Guntly has guided the efforts of the company through this entire process with the installation of Sun T2000 servers, and several Sun CT900 blade chassis.  With the throughput of the T2000 servers and the ability to consolidate services with Solaris 10 containers (zones), Steve expects to have a fully redundant site running with about 1.5 times the number of original servers.

Come here the entire story of how netINS has been able to substantially improve the performance of their existing infrastructure and provide room for future growth with a substantially smaller number of systems to support than originally anticipated.
11:00 am Taming the Wild West: Reigning in the Complexities of the Desktop Environment
Illinois Room

Sponsored by LANDesk

Michael Lambert
Desktop Engineer and Support Services
Team LeadCreighton University

How often does the task of supporting the desktop environment appear as futile as herding a pack of stampeding cats?  Are the Desktops and Laptops on your LAN still depicted as a dark cloud on your network diagrams?  Ever planned an upgrade using the age-old game of "Guess-timation"?  In today’s dynamic, ever-changing technology environment, I.T. Managers must employ a coordinated strategy for proactively managing end-user devices while on and off the organization's network.

Mike will share Creighton's story of bringing flexibility and order from a chaotic, decentralized environment, extracting valuable information to improve planning and decision making, and simplifying the support experience for faculty, staff and students.

1:45 pm System Availability Strategy
Missouri Room

Sponsored by SunGard

Shawn Paskevic
CIO
NEBCO, Inc.

A disaster doesn’t have to be something as great as an F4 tornado or the 2008 Iowa floods; it can be something as simple as leak in the roof or a power outage.  Experience the process from beginning to end of how one mid-sized company went from their existing server room to their new strategy for ensuring system availability.  The story starts with an innocent, unintended cut to the power lines in front of corporate headquarters, where the businesses’ servers reside and ends with an unlikely solution for a traditionally conservative company.  This session will not only cover some of the key points that were considered in developing a strategy, it will also provide some of the logistical and philosophical issues that were involved.
1:45 pm Creating Successful Business/Technology Relationships During Change
Minnesota Room

For this session, open conversation and sharing are encouraged.  All participants are invited to share insights, experiences and best practices to help create successful implementations of similar projects.
1:45 pm Growing a Company Using Hosted IT Services
Illinois Room

Sponsored by EdgeBCC

Carl Waldenmaier
Executive Vice President of Technology Integration
WorldWide Integrated Supply Chain Solutions

In the short time since Worldwide integrated Supply Chain Solutions was founded, the company has grown rapidly, due in part to the use of Hosted IT services rather than technology owned and maintained by Worldwide ISCS.  The freight logistics industry is data intensive and requires systems and connectivity to be online at all times to maintain contact with shippers and vendors.  Worldwide ISCS has found that the use of hosted services through a trusted technology partner has allowed the company to stay focused on the core business through best practices and adoption of cutting edge technology.

This session will discuss the experience of Worldwide ISCS and their growth through the use of hosted services.  You will learn how to leverage hosted technology to reallocate IT staff toward core business initiatives, leverage best of breed technology solutions, increase data security and performance and realign IT costs through a service model rather than upfront capital.
2:45 pm Selling Doom and Gloom to Your Executive Leadership
Missouri Room

Mark Clark
Director of IT Operations and Development
Bridgestone Bandag Tire Solutions

Selling catastrophic failure is a tough job. Nevertheless somebody has to be willing to address the issue of risk of the business failing -- spectacularly -- and that job often falls to the CIO.  How do you sell executive leadership on a project that doesn't make any money, isn't sexy and that basically nobody cares about until disaster strikes?  How do you overcome objections and excuses that you can't afford it, don't have the time and don't have the resources? Mark Clark of Bridgestone Bandag will discuss techniques CIOs can use to convince CEOs and CFOs that the creation of a business continuity plan is critical. Mark will discuss his experience in planning Bandag's business continuity plan and give tips on convincing your leadership that your business needs one too.
2:45 pm Improving Active Directory Security Through Workflow and Change Control
Minnesota Room

Sponsored by NetPro

Don Jones
Author

Active Directory is a key technology underlying organizations’ overall security and compliance efforts. Excellent security, as well as compliance with most major industry and regulatory efforts, is impossible to achieve and maintain unless Active Directory is brought under control. Management frameworks such as ITIL and COBIT provide direction for this control, but can’t enforce controls in the directory itself. Don Jones provides an overview of required capabilities for security and compliance, demonstrates free software tools that provide enforcement of change control and workflow for directory management, and reviews criteria for selecting commercial workflow solutions for your environment. Jones maps capabilities and criteria to key compliance requirements from HIPAA, SOX, GLB, and PCI DSS.
