- Software License Consolidation
Thought Leader: Steve Gahr, Purchasing Manager, Quad Graphics
Maneuvering through Volume Licensing Contracts can prove to be very complicated and confusing. Quad Graphics has uncovered ways to reduce both hard costs and soft costs associated with such programs as well as receiving regular updates on the frequent changes and promotions offered within the programs. This has given Quad Graphics the ability to make educated deployment and procurement decisions based upon the question “When is the best time to purchase and through which Volume Licensing Program?”

How to Develop a Strong CIO – CEO Relationship |
| |
Peter Stockhausen
Former CIO
Manpower
Imagine: the CEO of a staffing company announces that their internal HR processes and systems will be added to the company’s product line as part of a strategy to extend the business from staffing into HR services. While the HR organization in this company has considerable expertise and processes, their systems are limited to a few aging home-grown tools. HR is ready with their requirements for the development of a large multi-function custom application to automate their processes, which until now they have not been able to get funded, and the CIO recognizes that nearly all of the needed functionality is already available in commercial software, although that would require retrofitting the HR processes. Should HR, as an internal customer, dictate what IT will deliver? Or, should IT and HR be partners with equal voices in how to achieve the company’s strategic goal? Usually, these questions are not even asked – their answers are implicit in the status of the relationship between the CIO and the CEO. When that relationship is weak, IT’s role is limited to filling orders for its internal customers, regardless of whether that is good for the business. A strong relationship between the CIO and CEO enables IT to be a valued contributor in planning the growth, defining the strategic directions, and executing the transformation of the business.
Peter Stockhausen, who has 12 years experience as a CIO and now provides CIO consulting, will discuss the importance of the CIO-CEO relationship and will outline in detail how to develop and nurture that relationship. Starting with stories from his own career, he will assess what worked well and how those situations could have been improved. Peter will synthesize those observations and present a roadmap and checklists to guide other CIOs in developing productive relationships with their CEOs. Then, he will discuss the case of the HR system, outlined above, to show how to use this relationship to strengthen the overall business alignment and positioning of IT and to improve the value of IT to the business. Peter will conclude by summarizing the essential leadership activities required of a CIO in building such a relationship with the CEO. |
