Transform Your IT Organization - Order Taking to Valued Business Partner |
| |
 Brent Littleton
CTO
Security Benefit

Security Benefit successfully transformed its technology platform from a mainframe legacy platform to a highly sophisticated distributed systems environment. At the same time, the IT organization also went through a major transformation. In order for the company to obtain the benefits of the new technology platform, the IT department had to change from an “order taking” and “cost of doing business” type organization. To connect and provide added value to the business, the IT team transformed into a highly energized, fast paced, flexible and agile organization. This session will focus on:
- Keys to an IT organization’s transformation
- Building strategy, vision and performing execution
- Portfolio and program alignment
- Project Prioritization and Management – Do’s and Don’ts

Is There Still Life in the IT Career? |
| |
Phil Zwieg
VP of IS
Northwestern Mutual

Enrollment in IT related majors has been steadily and rapidly declining in the US and Europe since 2000. Many potential students have been scared away by overhyped news stories about offshoring and its impact on jobs in the US. Baby boomers are rapidly approaching retirment age. Birth rates are down across the globe. Other science and math related job opportunities are competing for scarce resources.
For those who look to manage this industry in the future, the combination of truth and fiction makes it difficult to determine the appropriate path. This presentation will focus on dispelling myths, reviewing the skill sets that will become critical in the future and talking about strategies to insure the "pipeline" for filling jobs will not dry up. |

How to Develop a Strong CIO – CEO Relationship |
| |
Peter Stockhausen
Former CIO
Manpower

Imagine: the CEO of a staffing company announces that their internal HR processes and systems will be added to the company’s product line as part of a strategy to extend the business from staffing into HR services. While the HR organization in this company has considerable expertise and processes, their systems are limited to a few aging home-grown tools. HR is ready with their requirements for the development of a large multi-function custom application to automate their processes, which until now they have not been able to get funded, and the CIO recognizes that nearly all of the needed functionality is already available in commercial software, although that would require retrofitting the HR processes. Should HR, as an internal customer, dictate what IT will deliver? Or, should IT and HR be partners with equal voices in how to achieve the company’s strategic goal? Usually, these questions are not even asked – their answers are implicit in the status of the relationship between the CIO and the CEO. When that relationship is weak, IT’s role is limited to filling orders for its internal customers, regardless of whether that is good for the business. A strong relationship between the CIO and CEO enables IT to be a valued contributor in planning the growth, defining the strategic directions, and executing the transformation of the business.
Peter Stockhausen, who has 12 years experience as a CIO and now provides CIO consulting, will discuss the importance of the CIO-CEO relationship and will outline in detail how to develop and nurture that relationship. Starting with stories from his own career, he will assess what worked well and how those situations could have been improved. Peter will synthesize those observations and present a roadmap and checklists to guide other CIOs in developing productive relationships with their CEOs. Then, he will discuss the case of the HR system, outlined above, to show how to use this relationship to strengthen the overall business alignment and positioning of IT and to improve the value of IT to the business. Peter will conclude by summarizing the essential leadership activities required of a CIO in building such a relationship with the CEO |
