Walter Weir
Chief Information Officer
University of Nebraska

Walter has been serving as Chief Information Officer for the University of Nebraska since 1995. In this position he reports to the President of the University. Some of the major activities he has been working on include:
  • Chair of the Nebraska Information Technology Commission Technical Panel, which has responsibility for designing and implementing the State of Nebraska’s computing, e-government and e-commerce infrastructure and architecture. Chair reports to the Lieutenant Governor.
  • Co-Prime contractor for Network Nebraska. Statewide high speed network that connects state government, K-16 education and over 88 medical facilities across the state. This network was instantiated in law via Legislative Bill 1208, this year.
  • Chair of the Financial Systems Task Force with responsibility for the successful implementation of a U-Wide SAP Financial and Human Resource software in a three-tier client/server environment on time and on budget.
  • Deployed the University's first Data Warehouse and subsequent Executive Information system. The Data Warehouse contains University financial, payroll, personnel, budget and student data periodically extracted from University wide administrative computing systems.
 Prior to moving to Nebraska, Walter was Associate Vice President and CIO at Fordham University in New York from 1986-1995 and prior to that was Associate Professor of Computer Science at the US Military Academy, West Point, New York from 1980 – 1986. He is a retired US Army Lieutenant Colonel and has master’s degrees in Military Arts and Science, Business Administration and Computer Science as well as a bachelor’s degree in Economics.
