11:00am Business Alignment and the SMB
Presented by BMC Software
Demonstration Theater 2

IT and Business Alignment has always been thought of as an objective for enterprise customers. But SMBs can also benefit it as well. Today’s small and mid-size businesses (SMBs) are continually looking at how to gain a competitive advantage and ensure their companies will continue to grow and meet their goals and objectives – whether its related to improving customer service, improving operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, or enhanced organizational control. SMBs, just like large enterprises, must align IT with the needs of the business. No longer can IT operate as an island within the business or be treated as an afterthought—its goals and the business goals need to be aligned to ensure success. This alignment is critical in today’s competitive environment, where limited resources, increased reliance on IT, and even government regulations are forcing businesses to implement best-practices, such as ITIL, to maintain both costs and control. For SMBs, it’s time IT became a true enabler of business success.

This concept should be applied to all organizations regardless of their size. In essence, there are no IT projects any longer— there are simply business projects that are supported by IT. The complexity of IT and business alignment can and will vary depending on the size of the business, but it is important to note that SMBs can reap the same benefits of BSM that large enterprise businesses can, with lower costs and resources.

Attendees will learn:
  • The philosophy of IT and Business alignment and how it can help SMBs reduce costs and align IT goals with business objectives
  • Best practices for getting started implementing alignment between IT and the business
  • How IT and Business alignment can help companies to manage change, maximize the value of their assets and deliver peak performance from their IT infrastructure
  • About where they fit in the IT maturity curve and why they should care

1:00pm The Future of Data Collection - RFID
Presented by AbeTech
Demonstration Theater 2

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is labeled as the future of data collection.  In an attempt to thwart the high costs of compliance RFID rollout and broad acceptance, industry boards have attempted to standardize the technology to help decrease the costs of consumable RFID tags and their various form factors.

Standard mobile radio frequency enabled data collection experienced years of high cost hardware as proprietary radios were standard and only when the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) board established the 802.11 standards did interoperability exist and prices spiral downward. This long process to standardization, approximately 15 years, hindered the overall acceptance as a widely affordable and viable technological movement. The RFID board is hoping to avoid this delay in acceptance on a wide scale by implementing standards at the beginning of the movement in order to decrease the mass overall rollout.

Learning objectives:
1. How RFID has been used in the past and how it can be used in your business plan.
2. Separate myth from reality in the ever-changing world of RFID.
3. Is RFID a viable option for your company from both a support and economical position?

4:00pm The Key to Maximizing Business and IT Systems Performance
Presented by Dr. David Ching, CTO, MQSoftware
Demonstration Theater 1

Business performance metrics help a company measure how well they are doing in respect to individual company goals, as well as in comparison to other companies with whom they compete. One of the major factors that affects business performance is the ability of IT systems to process transactions timely and successfully. Rather than assuming that the business performs properly when associated IT technologies are available and performing properly, direct measurements of real transaction status will assure that the business is available, performing properly and meeting business objectives.

Business transactions are generated by individual business applications and therefore provide the direct relationship between the IT infrastructure and the business.  Business managers measure value based on transactions processed, while IT managers measure business availability by performance and availability of IT systems. Unfortunately, performance and availability measurements of IT systems, which business managers use to determine that the business is performing satisfactorily, do not assure that transactions are being processed successfully.

Business Transaction Software provides the capability to assure business managers that transactions are being processed, and to assure IT managers that the underlying IT infrastructure supporting the business application is available and performing properly.
4:00pm Realizing the Power of Secure Collaboration
